Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I address you for the first time from this window that the beloved figure of my Predecessor made familiar to countless people throughout the world. We also think to that window where John Paul II, from one Sunday to the next and faithful to an appointment that became a friendly habit, guided the history of the Church and of the world for more than a quarter of a century, and we continue to feel him closer to us than ever. My first sentiment is still gratitude to those who have supported me with their prayers in these days and to those who have sent me messages and good wishes from every part of the world.

I would like to greet with particular affection the Orthodox Churches, the Oriental Orthodox Churches and those Oriental Catholic Churches that are celebrating Christ's Resurrection on this very Sunday. I address to these beloved brothers and sisters of ours the traditional proclamation of joy: Christós anesti! Yes, Christ is risen, he is truly risen. I hope with all my heart that the celebration of Easter may be for them a unanimous prayer of faith and praise to the One who is our common Lord and is calling us to walk with determination on the path that leads to full communion.

Mă adresez vouă pentru prima oară de la această fereastră, pe care figura iubită a Predecesorului meu a făcut-o familiară pentru nenumărate persoane din întreaga lume. Duminică de duminică, Papa Ioan Paul al II-lea, fidel unei întâlniri devenite un obicei îndrăgit, a însoţit timp de peste un sfert de secol istoria Bisericii şi a lumii, şi noi continuăm să îl simţim mai aproape ca niciodată. Primul sentiment al meu este şi de recunoştinţă faţă de cei care m-au susţinut în aceste zile cu rugăciunea şi faţă de cei care, din toate părţile lumii, mi-au trimis mesaje şi urări.

Doresc să salut cu o afecţiune particulară Bisericile Ortodoxe şi Bisericile Ortodoxe Orientale, care chiar în această duminică celebrează Învierea lui Cristos. Acestor iubiţi fraţi ai noştri le adresez tradiţionala veste de bucurie: Christós anesti! Da, Cristos a înviat, a înviat cu adevărat. Doresc din inimă ca celebrarea Paştilor să fie pentru ei o rugăciune de credinţă şi de laudă adusă Celui care este Domnul nostru al tuturor, şi care ne cheamă să străbatem cu hotărâre drumul spre deplina comuniune.

Très chers frères et soeurs!

Je m'adresse à vous pour la première fois de cette fenêtre, que la bien-aimée figure de mon vénéré prédécesseur a rendue familière à d'innombrables personnes dans le monde entier. Et pensons également à l'autre Fenêtre. De dimanches en dimanches, Jean-Paul II, fidèle à un rendez-vous devenu une agréable tradition, a accompagné pendant plus d'un quart de siècle l'histoire de l'Eglise et du monde, et nous continuons à le sentir plus proche que jamais. Mon premier sentiment est encore de gratitude à l'égard de tous ceux qui m'ont soutenu en ces jours par la prière, et de ceux qui, partout dans le monde, m'ont envoyé des messages et des voeux.

Je voudrais saluer avec une affection particulière les Eglises orthodoxes, les Eglises orthodoxes orientales et les Eglises orientales catholiques qui, précisément en ce dimanche, célèbrent la Résurrection du Christ. J'adresse à nos chers frères la traditionnelle annonce de joie: Christós anesti! Oui, le Christ est ressuscité, il est vraiment ressuscité. Je souhaite de tout coeur que la célébration de la Pâque soit pour eux une prière commune de foi et de louange à Celui qui est notre Seigneur commun, et qui nous appelle à parcourir de façon décidée le chemin vers la pleine communion.

Mi rivolgo a voi per la prima volta da questa finestra, che l’amata figura del mio Predecessore ha reso familiare a innumerevoli persone nel mondo intero. Di domenica in domenica Giovanni Paolo II, fedele ad un appuntamento diventato un’amabile consuetudine, ha accompagnato per oltre un quarto di secolo la storia della Chiesa e del mondo e noi continuiamo a sentirlo più che mai vicino. Il mio primo sentimento è ancora di gratitudine verso coloro che mi hanno sostenuto in questi giorni con la preghiera e verso quanti da ogni parte del mondo mi hanno inviato messaggi e voti augurali.

Vorrei salutare con particolare affetto le Chiese ortodosse e le Chiese ortodosse orientali, che proprio in questa domenica celebrano la Risurrezione di Cristo. A questi nostri cari fratelli rivolgo il tradizionale annuncio di gioia: Christós anesti! Sì, Cristo è risorto, è veramente risorto. Auguro di cuore che la celebrazione della Pasqua sia per loro una corale preghiera di fede e di lode a Colui che è il nostro comune Signore, e che ci chiama a percorrere con decisione il cammino verso la piena comunione.
